What are BNG Units?
BNG units are measurable improvements or avoided losses to biodiversity which developers can purchase to meet Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements and satisfy planning conditions.
How does BNG work?
Developers now need to assess the baseline quality of habitats and biodiversity on site before then assessing the impact on habitats from the development work as part of the planning process.

The 10% rule
The Environment Act 2021 requires a statutory minimum of 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG) for all new developments in England & Wales from February 2024. These can be delivered offsite by BNG habitat banks where it's not viable to deliver them onsite.
